What Is An Ignition Interlock Device?
An Ignition Interlock Device is a breath testing apparatus that attaches to your cars ignition system. After being charged with a DUI, or multiple DUI's, you may be required to install the IID in your vehicle. For the duration of the time the device is in your car you must blow into it prior to starting the vehicle. If you have been drinking and the IID registers a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) over the legal limit of .02 your vehicle will not start. Once the car is in motion you may be required to breath into the device randomly while driving.
Who Must Have an IID In Maryland
Anyone arrested for DUI or DWI in Maryland may be mandated to have an ignition interlock device installed as a condition of getting a restricted license or as a condition of having driving privileges reinstated. Any person has has their license suspended may be required to have the device installed and keep it installed on the vehicle the entire suspension period. Lastly, the courts may impose an IID on someone as a condition of probation.
